Largo, FL Area Guide
Part of the Tampa Bay area, Largo is a city in Pinellas County that has grown from small, rural farming community to the third largest city in one of Florida's most densely populated counties. Centrally located, it is the "crossroads" of Pinellas and home to over 75,000 people. Founded in 1905, Largo has grown from a sleepy vacation community to almost 17 square miles and near to the heart of professional sports teams like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Devil Rays, Lightning and Storm.
Today, at over a century old, Largo is a community that continues to grow. Over the last ten years, the city has developed more community venues, such as Largo Central Park, the Largo Cultural Center and the new Largo Public Library. Progress is ongoing and reflected in the fact that it's been named National Arbor Day Tree City seventeen years in a row.
With great activities, flourishing businesses and professional sports venues available, Largo has become a great place to work, play and live in today's modern world. Come visit, but bring an extra suit case, because once you get here, you'll be tempted to stay even longer!

History
The area known today as Pinellas County was first occupied by one of the four Florida tribes, the Timucua. When Spanish explorer Narvaez landed on the Pinellas Peninsula in 1528, they were met with resistance by the tribe and he and crew suffered, not just from hunger and exposure, but the ravages of nature. Three hundred years passed, parties of French and Spanish explorers trying to settle the area, but there was little success until 1823 when Count Odet Phillippe became the first permanent settler. By 1886, the Orange Belt Railroad was coming through the area and residents came together to give their town a name. After considering such names as Luluville, they chose Largo, named after the town's large lake.
Its central location and rich farmlands soon made largo the center of the area's citrus industry, earning it the nickname of Citrus City, shipping products to the north by the ton.
After World War II, veterans returned home and discovered they loved living on Florida's suncoast, an area known before only by local farmers and a few wealthy vacationers. Today, Largo is a strong community of more than 75,000 people enjoying the Florida weather, working and raising families.
